Atlanta Music High School
for students grades 6-8 (prep), 9-12
Our Vision & History
In 2017, CMC Atlanta founded Atlanta Music High School (AMHS) to fill a critical gap in local education. Before AMHS, Atlanta lacked a private conservatory option where teenagers could pursue both rigorous academics and deep, pre-professional musical training. For years, dedicated local students faced a difficult choice: compromise their academic goals, sacrifice their musical passion, or leave Georgia entirely to board at expensive out-of-state institutions like the Interlochen Arts Academy.
AMHS changes that narrative. To deliver an elite, globally recognized education alongside world-class musical training, AMHS proudly names the Atlanta International School (AISx) as our preferred dual-enrollment academic partner.
A Path for Every Musician:
Traditional to Progressive at AMHS, we believe that musical excellence takes many forms. We welcome and foster a wide range of artistic styles, ensuring that every student can discover and refine their unique voice:
- Diverse Musical Genres: Our curriculum fully supports intensive study in Classical, Jazz, Rock, and Folk music styles.
- Traditional Mastery: Students pursuing classical or acoustic traditions receive rigorous, conservatory-level training rooted in time-honored practices, deep historical context, and technical precision.
- Progressive & Modern Tech Practices: For students looking toward the current state and future of the music industry, we offer a progressive curriculum that seamlessly integrates modern music technology. Students learn the ins and outs of audio engineering, electronic music production, digital composition, and modern recording techniques alongside their performance training.
One Student, Three Exceptional Campuses
Our unique AISx-CMC Atlanta dual-enrollment model gives students the ultimate Atlanta experience, utilizing three specialized environments to optimize their academic, creative, and performance goals:
- Academics in Buckhead via AISx: Students attend their core academic and optional International Baccalaureate (IB) coursework through the flexible AISx Learning Track at the historic Atlanta International School Buckhead campus. This setup provides an elite, globally connected academic foundation.
- Conservatory Immersive in Sandy Springs (Brandon Hall Dr): The day-to-day musical core of AMHS thrives at our gorgeous, sprawling Brandon Hall campus in Sandy Springs. Nestled deep in the woods right on the Chattahoochee River, this serene and beautiful natural environment allows students to escape traditional classroom distractions and entirely immerse themselves in daytime rehearsals, masterclasses, and intensive personal practice.
- Performance & Urban Artistry in Inman Park: AMHS students can also integrate our historic Inman Park Church educational and performance spaces into their regular experience. Located in the vibrant, creative, and historic counterculture hub of Atlanta, this facility serves as an inspiring urban backdrop for collaborative projects, modern music tech tracking, community showcases, and dynamic live performances.
The Musical Core
To fulfill our pre-professional mission, the AMHS curriculum focuses on three core musical pillars:
- Applied Music (Private Lessons): Students receive intensive, one-on-one instruction from highly skilled, devoted faculty members to refine their technical mastery.
- Musicianship, Theory, Composition & History: Students enroll in comprehensive music theory, composition, history, and advanced musicianship classes. Taught by experts, these courses meet multiple times a week to build deep conceptual understanding.
- Performance, Production & Portfolio: Students collaborate in dynamic small groups tailored to their musical interests, including chamber ensembles, jazz combos, and rock or folk bands. Students also produce their own tracks and albums as part of their music academic coursework.
Every student's course load and weekly schedule is custom-designed upon enrollment. Through close consultation with students and parents, we balance the individual's artistic goals, personal interests, and academic requirements.
Additional Flexible Pathways
While AISx is our flagship and preferred partner track, AMHS remains highly adaptable to the modern educational landscape. We welcome student-musicians utilizing other accredited academic pathways that free up essential daytime hours for music, including:
- Online Programs: Synchronous or asynchronous schools, such as the state-run Georgia Virtual School.
- Nontraditional School Calendars: Local in-person schools with condensed daytime schedules (e.g., Rivers Academy, Capstone Academy, William & Reed Academy).
- Public School Flex Options: Hybrid scheduling through local public institutions like Midtown High School or Decatur High School.
- Homeschooling: Fully customized independent study tracks.
Programs Offered
- Atlanta Music High School: Open to dedicated student-musicians in grades 9–12.
- AMHS Prep Program: A parallel, immersive track for passionate students in grades 6–8 looking to build an early foundation in musical practice and performance.
